What is padel?

Padel started in a backyard.

In 1969, Enrique Corcuera built a small walled court behind his house in Acapulco, Mexico, and made up a game to fit it. A guest took it home to Spain. Fifty years on, it is the second most played sport in Spain and the fastest growing racquet sport in Europe and now finds a home in DC.

Padel is played two on two, on a court about a third the size of a tennis court, with glass walls the ball can bounce off. The racquet is short and solid, the serve is underhand, and the points run long. Unlike tennis- most people are rallying in the first hour.

The rules

  1. 1Always doubles. Two per side.
  2. 2Serve underhand, after one bounce, into the box diagonally across.
  3. 3The ball must bounce on the ground first. After that it can come off the walls and stay in play.
  4. 4Hit a wall before the ground on your opponents' side and the ball is out.
  5. 5Scoring is tennis scoring. 15, 30, 40, game. Best of three sets.
